In 1959, with the help of the Department of Agriculture, a new rural cooperative was founded by the merger of two smaller cooperatives, thus the beginnings of Star Telephone Membership Corporation.

Star, as it is called by many, is a nonprofit cooperative which is owned and operated by its members. We serve our members with the purpose of offering the lowest cost and highest quality communications possible. With our headquarters located in Clinton, North Carolina, we understand what it means to be rural. The farming communities we serve consist of a tight-knit family-centered region that we also call home. Country life may have a slower pace in eastern North Carolina, but our services definitely do not. Star was the first telephone company east of the Mississippi to offer a fully redundant fiber-optic ring, solidifying our commitment to offer the best in technology. We were also one of the first to offer 100 percent high-speed Internet service to all customers.

Star has dedicated itself to ensure our customers have the ability to communicate and prosper in the global economy. We will continue to bring cutting-edge technology to our area by prudently investing time, money, and effort for the betterment of our members, customers, and businesses. We live and conduct business by our corporate motto, “Neighbors Serving Neighbors”.

Star Communications is dedicated to excellence and to strive to be the best at providing quality services, competitive prices and dependability levels that are exceeded by none.

What is a cooperative?

A cooperative is an association of people that are united voluntarily to meet common economic, social, and or cultural goals. Star Telephone is proud to be a cooperative because we are member owned, self-governed, created to serve, and driven by values. There are many benefits to becoming a member such as an invitation to the Annual Meeting, earning a stake in the company, gaining capital credit and more! If you are interested in becoming a member, please contact our business office at 1.800.706.6538 for more information.

Cooperative facts:

  • 12% of the human population are members of a cooperative.
